Tension has gripped Sokoto metropolis after Islamic cleric Malam Musa Lukwa was reportedly stabbed twice in the neck shortly after leading Juma’at prayer at his mosque in the Mabera area.
The alleged attacker, identified as Mai Barewa, was reportedly among the worshippers and had previously threatened the cleric following controversy over a Hadith referenced during one of his sermons.
Sources said the suspect had earlier been arrested and arraigned over the alleged threat, with a court ordering his remand pending the case. Just four days before Friday’s attack, the cleric and his followers reportedly visited the Sokoto State Government House to submit a written complaint.
After the stabbing, worshippers reportedly overpowered the suspect and beat him to death.
Police spokesman DSP Ahmad Rufa’i confirmed that Malam Lukwa was receiving treatment at Specialist Hospital, Sokoto, while police were investigating the incident and taking measures to prevent further violence.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over religious tensions, mob justice and the need for restraint and due process in Sokoto.
