Women Leader: APC disqualifies C’River health commissioner

Indications emerged on Saturday morning that Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Ms. Betta Edu, had been disqualified as the South-South’s consensus candidate for Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress.

She was disqualified, according to APC sources, for being an appointee of the state government.

This is contrary to Section 84(12) of the amended Electoral Act.

The section bars political appointees from standing as delegates or being voted for at the convention of any political party in Nigeria.

The party’s convention sub-committee had disqualified political appointees elected as delegates from voting at today’s event in order to avoid running foul of the section.

In fact, it has emerged that the selfish desire of some members of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet to remain in office while contesting for elections was behind the delay in his assent to the Electoral Act.

The cabinet members are reportedly gunning to run in the forthcoming presidential, governorship and National Assembly primaries of their respective political parties.

Penultimate FrudaF, a Federal High Court in Umuahia, Abia State ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to delete the provision.

However, the National Assembly warned Malami against taking the step, even as it indicated that it would challenge the one-sided judgment at the Court of Appeal.

Eyebrows have been raised over why the judge refused to query the plaintiff for failing to join the National Assembly and the Independent National Electoral Commission in the suit.

Edu will.thus become the first casualty of the section which the National yrefused to delete despite pressure from Buhari.

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade is facing likely removal by a Federal High Court on April 6, 2022 over his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to APC.

Though he has denied being a member of AOC, the court will go ahead to decide on whether he should be removed from office.

Already, 20 members of the Cross River State House of AssrAssewho defected from PDP to APC along with the governor have been sacked by the court.
