Security aides of President Muhammadu Buhari were thrown off balance in Thursday as a young man in his 20s attempted to grab the president with his left hand.
The incident took place in Argungu, Kebbi State where Buhari has gone to attend the annual fishing festival and exhibition.
The president was having a photo shoot with some dignitaries, including Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, and one of his predecessors, Saidu Dakingari, when the youth dressed in a matching dark brown kaftan and jumper and black and white cap lunged at him.
He was within inches from Buhari when some vigilant securitymen blocked his attempt to grab the president with his left hand.
The eight-second video immediately spread through social media even as presidential spokesmen attempted to downplay the matter.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said it was a light matter that was blown out of proportion for “malicious” reasons.
“A young man was very excited to see his President at the Argungu fishing festival. He made to walk straight to him for a handshake. Security details prevented it. Now, opposite people are passing it off as an attempt to attack the President. How malicious can some people be!” he stated on Twitter.
But some respondents countered Adesina, wondering how anyone would attempt a left handshake with the president.
