Uyo: Tragedy as SUV kills two female footballers


Tragedy struck in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Tuesday when an SUV driver rammed into some players of Police Machine Football Club, Akwa Ibom State and killed two members of the team identified as Glory Saturday and Ani Ekong.

One other player, Monica Anya,Bea’s severely injured while three other persons who are not members of the team were affected.

The female footballers were returning home from training when an SUV rammed into them on New Stadium Road while trying to avoid a cyclist riding against traffic

A Police Machine Football Club player, Ekaette, said: “It happened along New Stadium Road after training this (Tuesday) evening from Mopol Base, along Idoro Road. Six people were involved. Three are our players. Two of them are dead while one is in critical condition. She is currently in the hospital.

“It happened because of a bike man (motorcyclist) that was driving on one way. A jeep was trying to dodge the bike man when he rammed into them.”

Meanwhile, the management and players of Ibom Angels have expressed sadness over the death of the Police Machine players.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ibom Angels said, “We express sadness over the unfortunate situation, as two players of Police Machine Team, got killed this evening in Uyo after closing of their training session at MopolBase,alongIdoro road, Uyo.

“It is so hard to bear this unfortunate event as information reaching the media unit of Ibom Angels indicate that the team was about travelling tomorrow (Wednesday) to Abuja for the Nigeria Women’s Professional Football League relegation play-off.”
