Gernot Rohr’s fate uncertain as NFF searches for replacement

Indications emerged on Thursday that the Nigerian Football Federation had asked Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, to resign.

Multiple reports had suggested that the Franco-German former Burkina Faso coach had been sacked.

But some football pundits such as Colin Udoh said the NFF had confirmed to him “on and off record” that Rohr had not been sacked but had been advised to consider resignation.

Another pundit, Godwin Nathan, said he spoke to Rohr and that the Super Eagles chief coach since August 2016 said NFF wants him out after a dismal outing by the Nigerian national team.

One report said a company associated with the Super Eagles had agreed to take care of the termination clause in his contract.

It is put at N600 million.

NFF is said to have informed him about the decision and asked him to resign he has lost the confidence of the team and Nigerians.

Rohr who led Nigeria to a third place at AFCON 2019 has come under intense criticism after recent drab matches by the Super Eagles.

Some of his comments on the performance and suitability of the Super Eagles have drawn much anger from Nigerians.

His decusdec to field a largely hone-bawed team in a friendly with Mexico drew the ire of Nigerian football watchers.

Already, NFF has begun the search for a new coach who will pilot the affairs of the team for the 2022 World Cup Play offs, and also the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon next year.

Nigeria will face any of Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, Mali or DR Congo for a place at Qatar 2022.

Emmanuel Amuneke is being cinsconsidas his replacement.

In an interview with PUNCH on Thursday on his alleged sacking, Rohr said: “Not yet, but that’s what they want me to do.”

NFF reportedly met for hours on Thursday to tidy up his exit and ensure a proper negotiation with his replacement.

NFF Assistant Director, Media, Ademola Olajire, said he was not aware of Rohr’s sacking.

He added that such a decision would be taken only after a board meeting of the NFF and a signed statement released to confirm the sack.

“I’m not aware of Rohr’s sack because there are procedures for doing things at the federation,” Olajire was quoted as saying by Sportingsun.

“Before such a decision could be taken, there will be a meeting of the NFF board and a release issued to the public.”
