#SexForGrades scandal: UNILAG, Foursquare suspend lecturer caught on BBC video

University of Lagos and Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria on Monday said they had suspended Dr. Boniface Igbenegbu, the lecturer caught on a British Broadcasting Corporation video asking an undercover female reporter for sex in return for admission.

The lecturer, who is also a pastor at the local Foursquare church, has also been asked to step down from ministerial duties pending an investigation into his alleged conduct.

The lecturer was caught in video telling the girl to kiss him in return for his help in getting admitted to the institution.

He also offered her a bottle of non-alcoholic wine.

He told the girl that there was a place on the upper floor of the university’s staff club called the ‘cold room,’ where female undergraduates were routinely made to have sex with lecturers.

BBC which aired the programme on its Africa Eye programme, said it visited the ‘cold room’ and saw young girls dancing with older male staff.

The university’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of its Governing Council, Dr. Wale Babalakin, Saud the lecturer had been suspended.

He said the lecturer would be investigated as the university “does not condone such behaviour.”

In a separate statement, the church through its National Secretary, Dr. Ikechukwu Ugbaja, dissociated itself from the lecturer’s alleged conduct.

It said: “Press Statement
The attention of the leadership of The Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria has been drawn to a video clip trending on social media platforms titled ‘Sex for grades: Undercover in West Africa Universities- BBC News’

“Wherein a lecturer in University of Lagos names Dr. Boniface Igbeneghu also described as a pastor in Foursquare Gospel Church was allegedly involved in sexual misconduct with some female students of the university.

“The general public is hereby informed that as a holiness and Bible-believing Church, we do not condone such heinous and unscriptural act among our ministers.

“We totally dissociate ourselves from the purported conduct of Dr. Igbenoghu and promise to take appropriate measure as soon as the ongoing investigation is concluded.

“Meanwhile, the pastor in question has been asked to step down from all ministerial assignments.
Thank you all.”
