The police in Akure, Ondo State have arrested the parents of a four-year-old girl, Toke Testimony Babalola, for allegedly beating her to death.

This was reported by a blogger, Oluyemi Fasipe @yemiefash, who had taken up the matter on social media.

He wrote: “I have just been updated that the parents of late Toke Babalola have been arrested by @PoliceNG, thank you all for standing with Toke. We will follow up to ensure justice is served. I will post pictures of the killer parents as soon as I have it.”

The police had swung into action after a public outcry over the death of the toddler and the snatching of her corpse by her mother.

She was rushed to the Annex of Ondo State University of Medical Sciences in Akure, the state capital.

However, after doctors pronounced her Deaf On Arrival (DOA), her mother allegedly snatched her corpse and fled.

The matter went viral on social media and the police were able to trace the parents through the help of public-spirited individuals.

Her father identified as Mr. Felix Babalola had allegedly tortured and inflicted marks in the girl because he was told that she was possessed.

The father, who is a member of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, had reportedly said it was in line with the church’s practice of exorcising evil spirits.

Her mother is, however, a member of Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Akure.

Photographs of the toddler’s corpse showed various deep cuts on her back, arms and other areas.

Her caregiver in her mother’s church had raised the alarm over her condition.

Parish Priest of Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Akure, Reverend Father Mathew Ologun, had told members of  the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Ondo State that the father confessed to having inflicted the injuries on the child.

According to Osun Reporters website, the father also “claimed that the girl was over-pampered by her grandmother who she had been residing with in Ikare-Akoko in Akoko North-East Local Government Area of the state since she was 9-months-old before she came live with them recently in Akure.

“The effort of the Rev. Father who had been monitoring the movement of the father of the girl since the news broke in order to hand him over to the police proved abortive as he absconded after being trailed to Benin garage in Akure.”

The state police command could not be reached for comments.
