Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, on Tuesday urged the Nigeria Police to punish the policeman who killed a youth in Obowo, Ikenna Ukachi.
He also called for the arrest and prosecution of those who attacked and burnt the headquarters of the divisional police station and also stole arms over the killing.
In a Facebook post in his visit to the youth’s family and the burnt police station, Ihedioha strongly condemned the killing.
He said: “Under no circumstances should a police officer who is supposed to safeguard the lives of the citizenry kill.
“The job of the police force is to protect the community and maintain peace and order. We must respect the sanctity of human life.
“To the youth’s, I maintain that breaking into police strong room is a criminal offence and the culprits must be identified and charged.
“I sympathise with the family of Ikenna Ukachi while assuring them that the state government will stand solidly with them in this trying period by ensuring that the incident is investigated and resolved.”
