Trigger-happy operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps on Thursday fired shots at a commercial bus on Milliken Hill Road, killing the driver and six passengers.
The operatives had allegedly tried to stop the bus as it left Enugu New Market park but the driver refused to stop.
They then chased the bus in a Toyota Hilux van and a tricycle.
They opened fire on the bus, forcing it to somersault into the deep gorge.
They were said to have demanded a bribe from the driver but he refused to oblige them.
The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, Mohammed Danmallam, confirmed the incident, saying that the alleged culprits had been identified and arrested.
He said investigations were still on even as a girl, who survived the crash, was in a hospital.
