Nigeria has again been subjected to international disgrace as the descendants and promoters of the ideals of the late African-American civil rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King, and his wife, Correta Scott King, have disowned an award purportedly conferred on Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
The 1st Black History Month National Black Excellence and Exceptional African Leadership Award 2018 was given to Buhari on Monday by a delegation of African-American activists led by Barbara Naomi King, the widow of the activist’s youngest son, Rev. A.D King.
However, the Martin Luther King Centre said in a statement on its Twitter handle @TheKingCentre on Wednesday that the award was not authorised by the family or the organisation.
The development has raised an international ethical storm about Buhari and his fight against corruption.
Reactions on social media have strongly condemned the award, which was allegedly arranged by one of Buhari’s aides and a Ghanaian businesswoman.
