Mass retirements in military as Buhari retires service chiefs

A major upheaval is sweeping through the Nigerian military after President Muhammadu Buhari fired the service chiefs on Tuesday.

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said in a tweet that Buhari named Maj Gen Leo Irabor as Chief of Defence Staff; while the new Chief of Army Staff is Maj Gen I Attahiru.

The new Chief of Naval Staff is Rear Adm AZ Gambo, while his counterpart in the airforce is AVM IO Alao.

Adesina said Buhari “congratulates outgoing Service Chiefs on efforts to bring enduring peace to the country.

I have accepted the immediate resignation of the Service Chiefs, and their retirement from service. I thank them all for their overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to Nigeria, and wish them well in their future endeavours.”

Many top military officers are expected to retire from the armed forces as a result of the development.
