A petrol tanker exploded on Otedola bridge on Saturday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway outward Lagos.
The tanker, with a full load of 44,000 litres, was heading towards Berger when other road users noticed that one of its tyres had caught fire.
They tried to stop the driver but he didn’t notice the alarm.
Just then, the truck started rolling backwards and pushed a Toyota Camry car with a family of six off the expressway and into a nearby drainage before exploding.
The tanker, which was said to have been hired by the Rivers State Government, burst into flames around 5.30pm.
The explosion grounded traffic outward Lagos even as rescue officials raced to the scene to put it out.
