A fuel tanker on Tuesday morning exploded on Egbeda-Iyana Ipaja Road in Egbeda, Lagos State, throwing residents into a panic.
The unregistered tanker loaded 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit at Abule Ado area of the state and was heading towards its supply point when it had a lone crash at Banire/Ejigbadero bus stop and somersaulted around 2am.
No lives were lost neither was any property destroyed but the tanker was still said to be half-loaded with petrol, according to the South-West spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Farinloye.
His statement reads: “At about 0020 the NEMA received distress alert on a tanker fully loaded with about 45,000 litres of PMS exploded immediately after crashing at Banire/Ejigbadero Busstop, Egbeda, Lagos State.
The tanker was said to have loaded at Abule Ado.
No life was lost or property destroyed However, the tanker with no registration number is still half filled with PMS and cross the major highway.
The Police Disaster Management Unit and Gowon Estate Police Station have apprehended the driver of the truck and his assistant.
Efforts are on to decan and transload the content to another tanker before road can be opened for traffic.
Agencies on the scene are NEMA, LASEMA Response Unit, Police DMU and the Gowon Estate Division.”
Farinloye urged users of the major road to find alternative routes between Egbeda roundabout and Banire roundabout.
