Lagos: Six die, 23 rescued as three-storey building collapses

Six persons have been confirmed dead and 23 rescued after a three-storey building collapsed at 38, Ibadan Street, Herbert Macaulay Way, Oyingbo in Lagos on Sunday night.

Witnesses said the three males and three females were pulled out dead from the rubble of the building while the survivors were rushed to the hospital.

Nine were discharged within hours and sent for psycho-social and trauma counselling by the Nigeria Red Cross.

Confirming the development, South-West Coordinator National Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said clearance operations were ongoing at the scene.

He noted that the residents of another three-storey building about 209 metres away at 100, Lagos Street were evacuated by officials of Lagos State Building Control Agency after it showed signs of distress.

He said the building had earlier been marked as distressed but the occupants refused to vacate the premises.

LABSCA officials had to forcibly ebuctntuem and re-seal the building, he added.
