A team of policemen from the Kwara State Criminal Investigation Department on Friday arrested a programmer, Adebowale Adekoya, at his residence in Lagos over a hemp story.
The story titled ‘Inside Kwara factory where indian hemp smoking is ‘legalised.’ It was carried by News Digest, an Abuja-based website to which he provides technical services.
The story was published on May 19, 2018.
The policemen intercepted him at Ikorodu Garage area and took him to Ensure Police Station where his wife came to meet them.
“They said the came from Kwara and that they were taking home to Ikeja. I asked them if they came from Ikeja and they replied that they came from Kwara.
“They said they would take him from Ikeja to Kwara and then to Abuja,” she recalled.
When she asked them which police station in Ikeja they were taking him to, one of them replied: “Shut up. Are you a lawyer?”
They then put him in a car and drove off, she added.
Sources said the police held him in lieu of the owner of the website.
It could not be ascertained why the police went for the programmer but there was suspicion that it may have been with the intent to get him to remove the story from the website.
It is believed that the arrest was instigated by a politician in Kwara State.
When contacted, the spokesman for the Kwara State Police Command, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed knowledge of the issue.
He said: “We are on the matter and by tomorrow (Monday) morning, the matter will be resolved.”
