Katsina: SERAP demands release of two held for insulting Buhari

Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project on Sunday demanded the release of two men accused of insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari.

SERAP on Twitter said: “We’re calling on @PoliceNG and @NigeriaGov to immediately and unconditionally release Lawal A. Izala, aged 70yrs, Bahajaje Abu, aged 30yrs & Hamza Abubakar, aged 27yrs illegally arrested for allegedly insulting President Buhari & Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari.

“We’ll challenge this blatant illegality in court if they’re not immediately released.

The offence of ‘insult’ is incompatible with the Nigerian constitution & human rights law.

Public figures exercising the highest political authority may be subject to criticism.

“The fact that some forms of expression are considered to be insulting to a public figure is not sufficient to justify restrictions or penalties.

Nigerian authorities must fully respect, protect and promote the right to freedom of expression.”
