INEC cuts ties with CBN

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Friday said it had cut ties with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

As a result, the electoral umpire will no longer store sensitive materials with the apex bank.

The action follows the partisanship exhibited by CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, when he paid N100 million for nomination and Expression of Interest forms of the All Progressives Congress for the 2023 presidential election.

He even went as far as procuring a spurious court order declaring him fit to run for office, in a clear breach of the CBN Act.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yaqub, who announced the decision to journalists in Abuja, said it was meant to protect election materials from being tampered with.

He said that beginning with the governorship election in Ekiti State scheduled for June 18, 2022, the umpire would no longer keep sensitive materials with CBN.
