Thugs sponsored by the Buhari administration on Wednesday attacked protesters in Abuja, who were demanding the scrapping of the replacement for the dreaded Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police.
The Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu had on Tuesday announced the creation of a Special Weapons and Tactical Team to replace SARS
But protesters who have been on the streets of major cities nationwide rejected the new name.
They said it was a ploy by the IG to retain SARS.
On Wednesday, thugs brandishing cudgels and other dangerous weapons attacked protesters and motorists at Berger area of Abuja.
They smashed vehicles caught up in traffic.
The hoodlums were, however, resisted by the protesters and later fled.
There were also reports that soldiers and policemen attacked protesters at some other locations in the federal capital.
