No fewer than four persons have been confirmed dead after an explosion hit a building housing a primary school, Winners Kids Academy, in Sabon Gari, Kano on Tuesday.
The building is located on Abba Road by Court Road.
Wailing rent the air as crowds gathered near the school.
Parents also rushed to pick their children from the school, with many of the pupils bearing bloodstains on their uniforms
BBC Hausa correspondent reports that Sabon Gari Market President Nafi’u Nuhu Indabo confirmed the incident, saying it had affected many people, including school children.
BBC Hausa correspondent in Kano, Khalifa Dokaji, visited the scene even as the police anti-bomb squad has meanwhile cordoned off the area.
The corpses of the fatalities were located at different points near the building.
One of them was mangled by the effect of the blast
Kano State Commissioner of Police, Samail’a Dikko, confirmed that it was an explosion at a gas shop on the ground floor of the building housing the school.
Meanwhile, Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, said the explosion was from an animal feed store opposite the school.
He said the cause had yet to be ascertained but that an investigation had been launched into the matter.
He promised that the state government would provide the public with details of the incident.
Curiously, a former Executive Director of the National Human Rights Council, Dr. Chidi Odinkalu, shared a report on the incident prepared by the police, in which they said it was a bomb attack.
The situation report said the male suicide bomber unsuccessfully tried to gain entry into the school.
When he could not, he then went to the road and blew up himself.
He killed three passersby in the process and caused immense damage to the school building.
