Ogun: Residents flee as tanker empties petrol on major road

Residents of Abule Ekun village in Akute, a busy suburb of Lagos located in Ogun State, were on Friday morning evacuated after a petrol tanker crashed and emptied its contents on the road.

The alert was issued by the South-West spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency Ibrahim Farinloye.

It reads: “A PMS tanker crashed and spilling its content in the areas around Ishaga to giwa busstop Abule Ekun village on Ijoko-Akute road.

We are appealing to the the residents to avoid cooking or using naked fire. Motorcyclists or tricycle riders must avoid going to the community till operations are concluded.

“Residents have been evacuated.
Content blanketed already to reduce its efficacy to explode.
Until the transloading of the content from the crashed tanker to another is concluded before the environment can be safe.

“Ogun Fire Service is on ground already.”

The operators of a nearby carwash mobilised water and detergent with which they stopped the petrol from igniting and causing an explosion.

By 9.30am, the situation had been brought under control while the remaining fuel in the tanker was being transloaded into another truck, according to Farinloye.
