For the second time in less than a year, a gas explosion has been reported in a suburb of Lagos.
Witnesses said the explosion occured at a gas depot at Balogun bus stop near Grail land in Iju around 3.05pm.
Victims sustained burns and were rushed to hospital, according to the spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Farinloye.
“A gas tanker exploded. Fire service have been called in by NEMA . People sustained burn injuries. We urge people to stay away from the area. The place is Balogun Busstop not far from Grail land,” he said on WhatsApp.
He added: “The tanker was trying to enter a gas plant at iju. It exploded before entering.”
However, photographs from the scene indicated that the explosion occured when a delivery van drove up to the loading bay of the gas plant.
Speaking on the casualty figure, Farinloye said: “Fifteen people were admitted to Iju waterworks Clinic, two referred to General hospital, three on critical observation and 10 are being treated presently.”
On the extent of damage, he noted that it affected 16 vehicles, two tricycles, two gas tankers, S& Y Event Centre and one church building.
Also hit were one block industry and attached office, one cement store and one sawmill as well as several building materials shops.
