A total of 12 senior lawyers out of 187 applicants have been shortlisted by the Nigerian Bar Association for appointment as Appeal Court Justices.
They are a former judge of the Court of Appeal of The Gambia, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and 10 other lawyers.
NBA General Secretary, Isiaka Abiola Olagunju, who spoke in a statement, said the list had been sent to the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, for consideration.
The screening, which took two days, was in response to a request by the NBA President, AB Mahmoud (SAN), for the nomination of “suitably qualified candidates for consideration for appointment into the Court of Appeal Bench.”
They are: Nnamdi Ibegbu, SAN (Anambra); former Judge of the Court of Appeal of The Gambia, Adegoke Oluremi (Ondo); Enewa Rita Ifeyinwa (Delta); Alma Eluwa (Imo); Oladipo Tolani (Kwara); Dr. Mohammed Alkali (Borno); Prof. Nsongurua J. Udombana (Akwa Ibom); Anwalu Mu’allimu (Kano); Prof. Augustine R. Agom (Benue); Gbadamosi Kazeem (Oyo); Dr. Yemi Oke (Ogun), and Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi (Sokoto).
They were called to the Nigerian Bar between 1979 and 2000.
The 187 applications were examined by Mahmoud and senior lawyers such as Chief T.J.O Okpoko (SAN), Mallam Yusuf Ali (SAN), Chief Charles Edosowan (SAN), Dr. Garba Tetengi (SAN, MNI), Dr. Balkisu Saidu of the office of the Vice President of Nigeria and Isiaka Olagunju.
