#EndSARS convener rescues ESUT students abducted by Enugu policemen

A civil rights activist, Segun Awosanya, popularly known as Segalink on Friday rescued some students abducted by policemen attached to Agbani Division of the Enugu State Police Command.

A detachment of policemen had raised students’ hostels and arrested a number of them on flimsy charges.

The rogue policemen then reportedly demanded N10,000 as ‘ransom’ to secure their release.

Segalink, who is the convener of the #EndSARS movement which organised protests across Nigeria last year to demand the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force last year, made contacts with top officers in the state command upon getting the information.

According to his subsequent tweets, the head of the Complaint Response Unit of the Force Headquarters, Abuja, ACP Marcus Ishaku, intervened in the matter and ensured the release of the abducted students.

The rogue policemen were also forced to refund the ransom already collected from their families.

Relatives of some of the affected students confirmed the release of their wards.

They said it had been a yearly ritual for policemen from the division to raid the hostels when exams are approaching and abduct students under flimsy pretexts in order to extort them.

Many students had as a result had to miss their exams.

The DPI of the station is also in the soup as he has been queried over the criminal conduct of his subordinates.

The rogue policemen are also to face appropriate disciplinary measures.
