The retired Professor from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) said the issue of sex for marks has been left hanging for long and if this issues were attended to before now, things would have been better.”
Basically, the issue of sex for marks is a big one that the Nigerian system has failed to take care of, in the United States of America for instance, when you resume as a fresh student you are given a form to fill and you are given a secure number to call incase anyone is harrassing you, so the University shows that your welfare is a priority but we lack that in Nigeria, exposing our young ladies to lots of dangers”
She said the case of Obafemi Awolowo University only exposes more issues.
“The case happening in Obafemi Awolowo University is just one of the numerous issues we have, I can recall a case when I was in OAU of a lecturer demanding for sex or money from this young lady, the lady came to me and i gave her the required money, she gave the lecturer and i accosted the man to challenge him, I took the money and warned him to desist, that is just one out of many instances that we have heard” she said.
Prof Oluremi Sonaiya also said a value system should be built if really Nigeria wants to grow: “A support system that builds value from our culture and society should be built, any culture that encourages sextortion should be abolished and also we must learn that not ladies are affected ,even guys are affected by this issues, some females demand sex from guys too.”
Prof Remi pushed that all erring lecturers should either be expelled or suspended from the University system to serve as deterrent to others.
Obafemi Awolowo University was recently enmeshed in a crisis after one of its student Osagie Monica accused a professor from Department of Management and Accounting, Akindele Peter,of demanding for Sex to pass her.
The case is ongoing with investigations even as the ‘randy’ professor from Obafemi Awolowo University has been suspended.
