President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday appointed Balarabe Shehu-Ilelah, a veteran broadcaster as the new director-general of the National Broadcasting Commission.
The announcement was made by Mr. Segun Adeyemi, an aide to the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
The new DG replaces controversial Prof. Armstrong Idachaba , who used the position to impose illegal fines on broadcasting houses.
He also recently threatened sanctions against broadcast stations that refused to deactivate the Twitter handles.
The bizarre order caused huge embarrassment to Nigeria, as a spokesperson for the American State Department, Ned Price, described it as baffling.
Idachaba, who was appointed in January 2020 after the former DG, Modibbo Kawu, was suspended lost his job over his mishandling of an incident involving Human Rights Radio in Abuja.
