ATBU tragedy: Victim identified as death toll rises

One of the victims of Monday night’s tragedy at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi has been identified as Salamat.
She was a 200 Level Chemistry Education student, according to her sister on twitter.
Her sister who goes by the handle Liquid Chemistry had up an alert on Tuesday morning, seeking useful information about Salamat’s whereabouts.
“Good morning! Please if you are are in ATBU bauchi, i need your help to find my sister. After the bridge collapse incident, we can’t reach her. She is in 200level, Faculty of Education (Chemistry Education). Thank you!” she posted.
Some hours later, one Abdurrhaman Aliyu responded: “A girl named Salma is found dead, I heard. She’s in Chemistry Education too. I hope she’s not the one.”
Some other contributors apparently confirmed his fears.
Liquid Chemistry tweeted again on Tuesday afternoon that her sister had indeed died.
“Thank you to everyone who responded, she drowned. My sister is gone!” she tweeted.
Condolences poured in from followers.
The bridge collapsed around midnight after heavy rain.
Located in the institution’s Gubi campus, it linked some hostels to lecture halls.
Meanwhile, the President of the ATBU Students’Union Government,
Nazar Mohammed, told reporters that the authorities of the school failed to fix the bridge despite repeated requests from students.

He said the students’ union had to repair the bridge to ease movement, noting that the tragedy would have been averted.
He said the death toll had risen to four.
