President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday bowed to fierce criticism from a close friend, Col. Abubakar Umar, over his perceived discrimination against Christians and Southerners in appointments by forwarding the name of the Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, to the Senate for confirming.
Buhari had refused to forward the Justice’s name for confirmation for unknown reasons.
However, Umar who is a former aide de camp to ex-Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, lambasted Buhari heavily in an open letter.
Umar warned that Buhari’s penchant for nepotism would hit his administration badly.
In response to Umar’s letter and strident attacks from Nigerians, Buhari forwarded the acting president’s name.
A statement by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, said: “President Muhammadu Buhari, in-line with his constitutional responsibility has sent the nomination of Her Lordship, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, Acting President, Court of Appeal to the Senate for confirmation as President, Court of Appeal.
“Justice Dongban-Mensem is a serving Justice of the Court of Appeal and was recommended, as is the practice, by the National Judicial Council for the nomination by the President.”
