A female staff member of the World Bank in Abuja, Mrs. Nike Ayedun, has died after being crushed to death by her husband, Makanjuola, at their residence in Abuja.
She was killed on Friday around 10pm.
The incident occurred at Gwagwalada, Abuja on Friday, May 14, 2021 around 10pm at Asokoro as he was reversing the car.
The car jumped across the road and crashed into a building, causing much destruction.
The killer husband was said to have tried to escape from the scene after blaming the incident on brake failure.
A family source said the incident was the culmination of domestic abuse meted out to the woman by her husband over a period of time.
“The whole issue started when Nike discovered that the safe box she had got for the purpose of saving money for her son, who demanded a huge birthday party, had been broken by her husband. She then confronted him about it. That was how the husband started beating her.
“After beating the hell out of her in the house, he collected her phone so that she could not call anyone. The man went outside and turned on his car’s engine while he came down to open the gate. Nike ran to the gate demanding her phone. The husband said he would crush and kill her, and before she knew what was happening, the man knocked her down with full force while reversing the car,” the source said.
The deceased was said to have two boys.
She was also said to be the breadwinner of the family and her husband was not employed.
The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation has reportedly indicated interest in the case.
Meanwhile, the case has been transferred from Gwagwalada Police Command to FCT Police Command, Garki, Abuja.
