Nigeria’s first female VC, Grace Alele-Williams, died at 89



Nigeria’s first female doctorate degree holder in Mathematics Education and first female Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Grace Alele-Williams, is dead.

She died at 89 after an illustrious academic and administrative career.

Her death was confirmed on Friday.

Born on December 16, 1932, in Warri, Delta state, she started in 1954 as a mathematics teacher in Ede, Osun State. Alele-Williams was appointed the first female vice-chancellor of UNIBEN in 1985.

The deceased had served as regional vice-president for Africa of the Third World Organization for Women in Science and was the first president of the African Mathematical Union Commission on Women in Mathematics.

She was a consultant to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Institute of International Education Planning.
