Policemen from the State Criminal Investigation Department of the Lagos State Police Command on Sunday night arrested Bello actress and producer, Funke Akindele aka Jenifa, for violating the state’s emergency declaration banning gatherings throughout the COVID-19 lockdowm.
The state has been on lockdowm for over a week as authorities battle the pandemic, which has claimed five lives and led to the hospitalisation of 232 persons.
She had held a party attended by over 20 persons at her house at Amen Estate in Lekki and uploaded the video on social media.
The video sparked outrage as Nigerians called for her arrest and prosecution for flouting the state’s laws.
The law prescribes a N100,000 fine or one-year jail term or both for violators.
The actress, who is married to Abdulrasheed Bello aka JJC Skillz, threw a party in his honour in Saturday.
She did her husband had fought back at their traducers, saying the attendees were part of the cast of an up and coming movie who couldn’t return to their homes before the lockdowm commencced.
Spokesman for the state command, DSP Bala Elkanah, confirmed the development and said she would be quizzed to determine the next line of action.
Elkanah said the police were on the hunt for the other persons who traced the party.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control has yanked off her video from her website.
Funke, who is said to be an NCDC ambassador, had featured in adverts for NCDC and Dettol urging Nigerians to wash their hands regularly.
The agency, which is in the frontline in the fight against COVID-19, and Dettol swiftly reacted to the development in separate tweets.
The agency said it had not appointed brand ambassadors.
The tweet reads: “As an agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria, NCDC has not engaged brand ambassadors as part of our response to COVID-19. We continue to emphasise that all Nigerians maintain social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
In its reaction, Dettol said:
“We have been made aware through social media that Funke Akindele recently, acting in her personal capacity, had a celebration which is against the caution to the public on social distancing during the covid-19 pandemic.
“The NCDC partnered with Dettol on a public service message to educate our communities about preventive measures against COVID-19. Funke is not a brand ambassador of the NCDC.
“As a responsible organization and brand Dettol does not condone any breach of the guidelines on Covid-19. As an organization, we are concerned at the turn of events.
“We will continue to support NCDC and the Nigerian govt to fight COVID-19.”
