Onitsha Catholic Archdiocese shuts down, cancels Easter, regular masses

The Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha in Anambra State on Thursday cancelled regular services and all scheduled ceremonies for the 2020 Easter.

The cancellations were contained in a statement by the Archbishop of Onitsha and the Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke.

The archbishop said he had suspended the celebration of all masses from Monday March 30, 2020 to April 15, 2020.

He directed the priests to celebrate private Holy Mass without the people.

Okeke also directed that “with regard to Crism and Cathedraticum, only the priest with two representatives will come from each parish (preferably the parish council vice-chairman and the president of CWO or any other worthy representative in their absence).”

He directed Catholic faithful to celebrate the Stations of the Cross(including Good Friday) on their homes.

He therefore said the secretariat of the archdiocese would be closed from today till further notice.
