Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and erstwhile Bayelsa East Senator, Ben Murray-Bruce, on Friday congratulated Bayelsa State Governor-elect Duoye Diri, on his declaration as the winner.of last November’s governorship election by the Supreme Court.

The apex court had voided the victory of All Progressives Congress candidate, David Lyon, on the grounds that his running mate, Diegi Eremienyo, presented forged certificates for the election.

The apex court therefore ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the certificates of return presented to Lyon and Eremienyo and present fresh ones to Diri and his running mate, Lawrence Ehwrujakpor.

Reacting to the verdict, Atiku said the Supreme Court had demonstrated its indie in the face of intimidation by retrogressive forces.in several tweets, he said: “I received the verdict of the Supreme Court, declaring the candidate of the @OfficialPDPNig in the Bayelsa state gubernatorial elections, Senator Douye Diri, as the duly elected Governor of the state, with gladness.

“Senator Douye Diri had cause to visit with me before the elections and received my blessings and counsel. I am fully satisfied that he has what it takes to make Bayelsa the ‘glory of all lands’. His intellect, personality and character, are a credit to Bayelsa and the PDP.

“I call on all the people of Bayelsa to make peace with the recent past and embrace the future together, united in the mission to transform the state into a haven of peace and prosperity.

“Finally, I urge the Supreme Court to show consistency in its judgments & find the resolve to always deliver just-judgments no matter whose ox is gored. The people of Nigeria are behind the apex court in whatever they do to free themselves from the dominance of dictatorial forces.”

In his own tweet, Murray-Bruce said: “I celebrate you, my friend and brother, Senator Douye Diri. Your victory at the Supreme Court is a victory for truth and most especially, a victory for the great people of Bayelsa State. I wish you the best as you continue gallantly, the journey of your predecessor.”
