Court orders FG to recover life pensions from Tinubu, Akpabio, Fashola, Saraki, 13 other ex-governors

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to recover life pensions running into billions of Naira from former governors of 23 states.

The landmark judgment was obtained by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

The court also directed the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) to challenge the legality of states’ pension laws permitting former governors to collect such pensions.

The court has adjourned till February 3, 2020 for report of compliance with the judgment by the Federal Government.

Reacting to the judgment on it’s Twitter account, SERAP wrote, “We won’t rest until this judgment is fully enforced and all state governors follow the Zamfara State example by immediately abolishing pension laws in their states”.

Among the beneficiaries of the.life pensions are: Bola Tinubu, Babatunde Fashola, Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos); Godswill Alpabio (Akwa Ibom); Bukola Saraki and Ahmed Lawal (Kwara); Adams Oshiomhole (Edo).

Other states are Delta, Kano, Gombe, Yobe, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Osun, Ondo, Rivers, Kogi, Anambra and Katsina.

Some state governors had passed bills into law that will enable them earn life pensions after their tenures.

Some State House of Assembly Speakers and deputy speakers also enjoy the packages.

Zamfara State Governor, Dr Bello Matawalle, on November 27 signed into law, the bill stopping allowances for former governors, deputies, speakers and their deputies in the state.
