Burning Lagos building collapses, kills policeman

A portion of a multi-storey building, No. 43 Martin’s Street on Lagos Island, collapsed under the weight of a fire on Tuesday, killing an unnamed policeman.

The policeman was controlling the surging crowd at the usually busy market, when the building crashed around 8.30pm.

He was severely injured and died later.

It took firemen hours to put out the blaze though they were able to contain a separate fire on Dosunmu Street within a short time.

His death was confirmed by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Lagos Central Business District, Olanrewaju Elegushi, who said he died in the hospital.
