Gridlock ensued on Friday morning on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after two fuel tankers exploded within a few metres of each other on the inward Ibadan side near Redemption Camp.
Metrostarng correspondent at the scene reports that a huge blaze lit the area even as the Federal Road Safety Corps diverted traffic inward Ibadan to the other side of the expressway.
The cause of the explosions or casualties could not be ascertained as a response was being awaited from the Sector Commander of FRSC Ogun State Command, Mr. Clement Oladele.
Commenting on the situation, spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command, Federal Road Safety Corps, Route Commander Florence Okpe, said: “ROAD TRAFFIC CRASH REPORT FROM FRSC OGUN STATE COMMAND OF A TANKER LADEN WITH KEROSENE THAT OCCURED ON THE LAGOS – IBADAN EXPRESSWAY ON FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER,2019
The incident occurred at about 0725hrs
along the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway at KM30 of the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway around Christopher University, Mowe, Ogun State.
The crash involved a total of seven people, all male adults, with one sustaining injuries.
There was no death recorded from the crash.
The crash involved two vehicles, a white coloured MACK tanker with registration number
The second vehicle is an ash coloured Toyota Camry with registration number AGL472FH
The suspected cause of the crash is excessive speeding which led to loss of control and the tanker flipped and engulfed in fire .
The Fire Service were immediately invited which extinguished the fire.
The crash scene has been cleared and traffic restored on the expressway
The injured victim was rescued to Famobis Hosiptal Lotto, near Mowe, Ogun State
The FRSC Ogun State Sector Commander Clement Oladele, has advised drivers, including those driving articulated vehicles to drive cautiously and within the recommended speed limit to avoid unnecessary road traffic crashes
The Sector Commander also advised tankers conveying petroleum products to adhere strictly to prescribed standards of installing safety seals in the tankers conveying petroleum products, with
the tanker installed with a safety seal, even when it flipped after the driver lost control ,the contents would not have spilled thus averting fire outbreak.”
