Controversial former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, has died aged 95.
The death of Zimbabwe’s first post-colonial leader was announced by his successor, Emmerson Mnagagwa, on twitter.
He said: “It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe.
“His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
After three decades in power, he was overthrown in a military coup in November 2017 and had been in a hospital in Singapore for months.
At a point, Mugabe was the world’s most educated leader, with seven degrees.
