Kogi State National/State Assembly Elections Tribunal on Friday sacked Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The tribunal upheld the claims by a former senator representing the zone and the All Progressives Congress candidate, Smart Adeyemi, that the election was marred by irregularities.
Its chairman, Justice A.O Chijiok, ordered a fresh election in the zone.
In his response, Melaye said in a tweet: “On Tribunal judgement. No cause 4 alarm at all. Even if it went my way they will still go to the Appeal Court. Our mandate can not be taken. We will get judgment at the Appeal Court. There will be fresh election in Kogi West bc I will be Governor. For my Senate mandate no shaking.”
Melaye, who is running for governor, added: “He who laugh last, laugh best…KOGI Governor loading.”
Adeyemi had after the election in February 2019 alleged that it was as marred by irregularities.
His tweets on April 17, 2018 after filing his petition read: “The true question remains, will the justice system perform, as evidently there were discrepancies in the electoral process of the National Assembly elections for Kogi West senatorial district.
“So many irregularities and disorganizations that plagued the election, which all created the perfect storm for the sinister activities that guaranteed the theft of the Kogi West mandate.
“We’ve decided to fight the results of the elections in the tribunal court because constitutional injustices must not be allowed to stand.”
