Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Nse Essien, on Thursday decried recurring attacks on female hostels at University of Uyo.
This was according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ekerete Udoh.
Speaking during a visit to the institution, he commiserated with the residents of the hostels, especially Hall Six.
He was accompanied by the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Aniekan Brown; Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Education Monitoring, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, and a former Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Matters, Comrade Otobong Akpan.
Briefing the commissioner, the Dean said the institution has reached out to the police to mount surveillance on the hostels.
He warned resident students against accommodating non-students in their rooms and gave the hint that the school authorities would carry out surprise checks on their rooms.
He also advised the students to be security-conscious.
Also in the visit were SSA to the Governor on Security, Mr. Duke, Vice-President, UNIUYO Students’ Union Government, Comrade Obongodu, and SUG Secretary-General, Comrade Edikan Ufanobong.
