Police/Shiites clash: Channels TV reporter escapes death

28

An unnamed reporter with Channels Television on Monday escaped death after he was shot during a flash between police and Shiites in Abuja.

The clash, which took place around the Federal Secretariat, caused pandemonium as civil servants and people around the area fled for safety.

Gunshots rent the air as the police used live bullets to stop the Shiites from gaining access to the Eagle Square.

A post belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency bat the secretariat was burnt down.

No fewer than 12 persons were reportedly shot dead in the bloody clashes.

Shiites two weeks ago tried to overrun the National Assembly, forcing the House of Representatives to adjourn abruptly.

They have repeatedly called for the release of their leader, Ibrahim el Zakzaky, his wife and other detained members of the group.
