Channels TV reporter, police boss die in Shiites’ protest

A corps member serving with Channels Television, Precious Owolabi, and a Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, FCT Police Command, Usman Umar, were among the fatalities in the bloody clash between the police and Shiites in Abuja on Monday.

While the DCP was killed while trying to stop the Shiites from burning a facility belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency, the reporter died after a stray bullet hit him.

The station confirmed his death in a statement which reads: “A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving with Channels Television, Precious Owolabi, is dead.

The 23-year-old died of a gunshot wound he sustained while covering the clash between the police and the Shiite protesters on Monday in Abuja.

The management and staff of Channels Television are greatly saddened by the untimely and unfortunate death of such a promising journalist.

They pray that God will grant his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, and avail his soul eternal rest.”

The DCP has since been buried according to Islamic rites.

The Shiites are demanding the release of their leader, Ibrahim el Zakzaky, his wife and their colleagues from detention.
