Though Mrs Nkem Chibogu Kenneth Mordi hails from Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, she is not deterred from vying for the Senate under the United Progressives Party to represent Lagos West. She tells INNOCENT ENETA about her motivation and programmes for the senatorial disistrict.
Hope your campaign is going on fine. Kindly introduce yourself to our readers.
Good day powerful people of Lagos West, family, friends and Nigerians at home and abroad on this portal. Permit me to reanimate you more about my candidacy. I am forced to reckon with now, the people of Lagos- West want Mordi. With the support I have, I will bring ‘Character’, ‘Capacity’ and ‘Competence’ to our district. Yes my campaign is going fine…Door to Door….House to House…meeting respective representatives of groups that matter in Nigeria. Oh yea very fine and I am good to go.
How did you get into politics?
How I got into politics isn’t too important a question to ask. I have said so because anyone who is really interested in making things work in his or her country is free to take the bull by the horn.
I’m interested in my country Nigeria and interested in giving the people the dividend of democracy. In other words, it means I need to get it done and the only way is by taking up the duty of representation. If you say it means getting/ or joining politics no problem…seems it can only be got done under that umbrella.
Who motivated you to go into politics?
My husband, He’s a great man in politics over 30 years and I have watched him closely. How he does it? He actually differentiates politics from charity.
That goes a long way…I would repeat he’s my mentor and has touched lives politically.
Weren’t you scared of the demands of the politics, especially being a woman?
Scared of the demands !How? Being a woman is out of it because we all know that what a man can do a woman can do 100-fold better.
What was your background like?
My background was awesome…with my family (Daddy, Mummy ,Brothers and Sisters, family and friends, loved ones). It was a happy home that gave me a wonderful and bright future of today. I would say God is good!
How old are you and what’s your educational background?
My age isn’t necessary but I would say from looks everyone knows I’m a youth so…a youth for a proper and special representation. Hahaha hahaha hahaha my educational background huh huh,huh.hu. I would say from the look of things I’m very much qualified.
Have you ever run for political office?
Hmm mm I would say yes…reason is I held a post in Igbo Vsion which is a political group of Nigerians at large.
How was the experience like?
It was good. Yeah, it was good.
Why did you choose a door to door campaign?
I chose a door to door campaign because I really did need to get to the grass roots, poor masses who are not Internet literate and most especially to safeguard my good people of Lagos West from the dangers of rallies and campaigns on the streets of Lagos. This is especially with what is happening now – killings, high death toll, just because of campaign.
I can’t endanger the lives of those who will vote for me, and who will enjoy the dividends of democracy when I get into office.
That’s why I decided to go to their homes to talk to them it’s safer and it’s more of me being a smooth operator.
Do you think that that will be effective, knowing that Nigerian politics is driven by money?
Lol it’s very effective . The reason is that Nigerians are wiser now…as wise as a serpent. This year isn’t going to be about parties and you know it will be about individuals who have capacity, competence…not about pedigree…oh not all.
How have you been funding your campaign?
How I have been funding my campaign does not really matter. OK what matters is this: Are the campaigns going on well? …if yes then it’s OK and fine.
What do you intend to achieve in the Senate?
A lot…a lot…a lot not done in Lagos West…I was born in Lagos West so I’m not blind…roads, basic health scheme, then empowerment for the very most important people (women/youth) In my district will go a long way in taking them off the streets, perhaps getting busy I meant…
These basics for a start will be unique ,will add colour to the district.. anytime, any day…
These are basic necessities. Whoever gets these must be living in heaven on earth, if there’s anything like that.
What are your cardinal programmes?
The New Lagos West district will be purposefully driven anchored by the ‘office of the citizens,’ which is the public highest office of our nation.
This would be achieved by well organised town hall meetings and other innovative interactive means through which the people will get to express themselves on their expectations and ideas. These are geared towards making our senatorial zone and state at large a better one for all.
I’m on a mission, to take away power from the hawks and return it to my people. My vision is long range and very simple.
Honour to God and care for my people.
Do you truly think you can make an impact in the election running on an unknown platform?
What do you mean by an unknown platform? Any party recognised and registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission isn’t unknown. It’s for the masses to open their hearts and eyes and make sure they elect based on capacity, competence etc not just party.
What is your message to your people?
My mission in the Senate is to free the good people of Lagos West from socio-political slavery through Legislation. I will defend the rights of women, youths and children in Nigeria not just in my district. Scholarships, empowerment, skill acquisition training, good hospitals, roads etc would be built if I’m elected.
My mission to the Senate will be to liberate the people from socio-political and economic bondage through Cognitive Legislation..
I wish other contestants would shun politics of calumny and rather make it issues-based.
Furthermore, social media noise will not have any effect on the outcome of this election. Make sure you vote.
#It’s my Mandate!#.
#Help me in recovering Lagos West District#
#It’s our collective task come February 16. ha binye aka ebe esere isiagu for integrity, capacity, character so that Lagos West will be great again#.
Do you think you can match the incumbent, Olamilekan Adeola, with his immense resources?
Lol immense resources only during elections. Thereafter, he will be nowhere to be found. People are wiser now. That’s all I’ve got to say.
Why do you think as an Igbo woman you can make an impact in a typical Yoruba area?
Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa (WAZOBIA).
We are one Nigeria. Impact can be made anywhere. Personally I don’t segregate …never at all.
Segregating is simply done by myopic minds and people.
