Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai yesterday formally announced the death of former military Governor of the defunct North Central State, Brig. Gen. Abba Kyari.
In a statement, El-Rufai said the government has condoled with the family of the late elder statesman, whom he described as a shining star of his generation.
“General Kyari, who died at the age of 80 years, was appointed military governor of North Central State in 1967, and served in that role until 1975.
“We note with gratitude that Allah blessed him to ripe old age. We pray Allah to grant him Aljannah Firdaus and to uphold his family,” the statement reads.
The governor said the state government would miss the advice and wise counsel of the late former military governor.
El-Rufai recalled that earlier this year, he had the honour of visiting Kyari to thank him for his service to the state.
Also, northern leaders, under the umbrella of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) have expressed grief over his death.
A statement yesterday by the National Publicly Secretary, Ibrahim Muhammad Biu, said the late Kyari was a pillar to the development of the north.
The statement added that the late general “was an officer and gentle man who served Nigeria in various capacities as a military officer and also on various government boards after retirement.
“He was a foundation member and also member of the Board of Trustees of ACF. He was an embodiment of discipline, diligence, selfless service and above all, loyal to the cause of nation building.”
ACF described late elder statesman as a man of great vision and a strong pillar that supported the unity and stability of Nigeria.
The forum extended its condolences to the family, the government, people of Borno State, and all Nigerians over his demise.
