Yet another member of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet has been exposed for skipping the mandatory national service organised by the National Youth Service Corps.
Minister of Communications, Adebayo shittu, was exposed in an investigation by Premium Times for deliberately failing to observe the mandatory one-year service.
Premium Times reports that several checks at NYSC revealed that Shittu did not turn up for national service after graduation from then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) at the age of 25.
He read law and graduated in 1978.
He confirmed the development when contacted by the online newspaper and said he thought his first political officee as member of the Oyo state House of Assembly in 1979 could suffice as national service.
“The constitution provides for the qualification needed for state assembly members, NYSC is not there,” Shittu said. “I didn’t need it to become a member of the state assembly, and that is already a service.”
He faces up to 12 months in prison.
Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, had bowed to pressure and resigned from her position last week after being exposed as having submitted a forged NYSC exemption letter.
