Gridlock as petrol tanker explodes on Lagos bridge, engulfs vehicles


A petrol-aden tanker upturned and exploded on Thursday evening on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, engulfing an unknown number of vehicles.

The tanker, which was outward Lagos, suffered brake failure on the bridge near Sir Michael Otedola Estate and exploded.

No fewer than 54 vehicles neat the tanker were engulfed in fire even as their occupants were feared killed or injured.

Rescue officials, police and traffic agents were immediately deployed in the scene.

The crash caused a gridlock on the busy road there were fears that the bridge may have been seriously damaged.

Road users were advised to take Ikeja to Berger or CMD Road.
