June 12: Buhari begs families of Abiola, Rewane, others

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday begged for forgiveness from the families of the late acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, and others killed in the course of the struggle for the revalidation of his mandate.

Among those killed were his wife, Kudirat Abiola; Pa Alfred Rewane; Suliat Adedeji; a journalist, Tunde Oladepo as well as an unspecified number of protesters.

They were either shot dead or maimed by soldiers, police and State Security Service agents or assassins working for the repressivenregime.of the late Gen. Sani Abacha.

In a tweet to commemorate 25 years of the election, Buhari said: “On behalf of the Federal Government, I tender the nation’s apology to the family of the Late MKO Abiola, who got the highest votes in the June 12, 1993 election; and to all those who lost their loved ones in the cause of the June 12 struggle.”
