Ahead of the July 14, 2018 Ekiti State governorship election, a non-governmental empowerment organization – Ekiti Development Forum (EDF) – has berated Governor Ayo Fayose for describing its programmes as as “political” and “fake.”
The group, which described Fayose’s statement as “blackmail from a frustrated mind looking for a corner to cut” said “it is too late for Fayose.”
Its convener, Adeoye Aribasoye, declared that “no amount of blackmail can change the minds of Ekiti people who are determined to stop his continuity of slavery and embrace better change. The blackmail will not deter EDF from contributing to the people’s welfare.”
EDF is an empowerment initiative of the human rights activist and lawyer, targeted at assisting citizens in fighting for their rights.
The NGO, which has successfully empowered no fewer than 150 people in the state irrespective of political inclination, recently announced its support for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, because of his people-oriented programmes and developmental agenda which EDF believes in.
The governor had alleged that “the APC is perfecting plans to cajole the unsuspecting Ekiti to vote for Fayemi through fake empowerment which they did not do before now. They suddenly woke up to deceive people into it because of election.”
The governor had accused APC of distributing “fake empowerment forms” in order to lure voters into supporting Fayemi during the July 14, 2018 governorship election in the state.
In a swift reaction, Aribasoye said: “It is not a surprise because that has been his own style; hence the belief on his part that every other person must be a deceit.
“You will recall that Fayose cajoled the teeming Ekiti youths into submitting their CVs at Spotless (Hotel), which was just to deceive them into voting for him.
“For our part, we are genuinely committed to letting our help reach the suffering masses of Ekiti, whom the Ayo Fayose-led administration has put in perpetual hardship.
“EDF is not an organisation rather an NGO initiated by my very self to contribute my own quota to the society that has made me.
“Yes, our organisation is supporting the APC candidate because of his antecedents, particularly in the area of service delivery to the people.
“This can be seen in the introduction of a social security scheme for the senior citizens and the youths. Today, the same has been cancelled by the Ayodele Fayose-led administration.
“Our organisation shares some core values with Dr. Fayemi. We strongly believe that his government will bring good government, alleviate poverty and provide security to the citizens of Ekiti State.
“It should also be made clear that our organisation has not received a dime from anyone. We are funding it from the proceeds of my legal practice.“ he added.
