Controversy as Yoruba monarch converts to emir

Controversy is brewing in Pain State oer the decision of the Oluwo of ISO, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, to convert from a Yoruba monarch to an emir.

Akanbi announced the decision at the at the installation and ceremony of an Islamic scholar, Yahquub Abdul-Baaqi Mohammed as Waziri of Yorubaland on Saturday.

The traditional ruler ignored the advice of the League of Imams and Alfas in Southwest Nigeria, Edo and Delta States, who urged him to restrict the title to Iwoland.

He said that the perceived disunity among Yoruba traditional rulers promoted his decision to align with Northern Nigerian kingship system.

He also said he had incurred the wrath of unnamed interests because he refused to join a cult.

Diverse reactions have greeted his decision as many commentators on social media called on Governor Raid Aregbesoola to dethrune hinv and save the traditional institution.
