A recent statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, about Governor Ayodele Fayose has drawn the ire of the media aide to the Governor, Mr Lere Olayinka, leading to a verbal exchange.
Ojudu had while officially declaring his intention to contest for the post of governor of Ekiti State under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), accused the governor of large scale corruption, promising that if elected, he would probe Fayose and recover Ekiti resources from him.
But Fayose’s aide, Olayinka, alleged that Ojudu “is a scammer, who is only using his declaration to contest the July 14, 2018 governorship election to raise funds from unsuspecting members of the public knowing that he won’t even come near the APC ticket.”
Olayinka said: “Although Governor Fayose is not afraid of being probed by anyone, it is laughable that someone like Ojudu, who did nothing for Ekiti State as Senator for four years and was not bold enough to seek reelection because of fear of losing scandalously is the one talking about probing the governor”.
He challenged Ojudu to tell Ekiti people one benefit that was derived from his four years as a senator, saying: “Today in Ekiti, it can be said of Fayose that he constructed the first flyover bridge, modern markets, modern high court complex, dualised roads, governor’s office, among others in Ado Ekiti. What did Ojudu and his party do?”
Ojudu had said Ekiti was facing serious challenges of hunger, poverty and squalor allegedly imposed on the state by Fayose following selfishly amassing the state resources, saying: “We must rescue our people and if you give me the ticket, be sure that I will defeat Fayose,” adding that he would probe Fayose’s government.
The APC chieftain alleged that the three and half years under Fayose had been disastrous in terms of alleged looting of the state’s treasury, saying no effort would be spared to stop the governor from realizing his continuity agenda
He said: “We have information, I mean veracious ones, about how Fayose had been acquiring government property, particularly lands to construct property in Ado Ekiti.
“As we speak, he has about 20 property in various sections of Ado
Ekiti. All these we are going to recover from him when we get to
“But our party needs to tread cautiously to be able to defeat this
cunning man. We must be able to keep secret because he (Fayose) had succeeded in infiltrating our ranks. He has planted people in our ranks to leak vital information to him, so we must be cautious.
“I know that the challenges of the recent years have galvanized our
people to be resolute to fight the battle ahead. The next election is
a must-win for APC.
“Governor Fayose is planning to rule the state by proxy by attempting
to put his surrogate on the governorship seat. Let me assure you, we are going to foil such attempt.
“Let me say this, I have all it takes to liberate Ekiti from the slavery they were put into by Fayose. I had once defeated him in a
senatorial contest and I will do same again if given the opportunity”, he added.
Ojudu, who said the party needed unity among members to defeat the ruling party in the poll scheduled for July 14, urged party members to refrain from character assassination and back-biting.
But Fayose’s aide, who advised Ojudu to face the uphill task of securing the APC ticket before attacking personalities or threatening to probe anyone, added that: “Even with his sparsely attended declaration of today, it should be clear to discerning minds that Ojudu is only in the governorship race to enrich himself.
“It is on record that Ojudu was the only one who did not seek reelection in 2015 out of the three APC senators in the State then and it was because he was not even sure of getting votes in his family compound in Ado Ekiti that chickened out,” he said.
