Unidentified hoodlums on Wednesday attacked a duty vehicle taking 18 suspects from Sokoto Prison to court.
The miscreants ambushedbthe vehicle and attacked prison guards with machetes and oth dangerous weapons but were repelled and overpowered by prison guards and policemen.
The hoodlums, armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons attempted to set free the inmates being taken to court along sultan Abubakar Road, Sokoto around 10am.
Spokesman for the state pruson command, Bello Farouk, said the prisoners were successfully escorted back to safe custody in the prison yard and security beefed up in and around the facility.
The controller of prisons in the state, Haliru Nababa, thanked the police for responding to the situation.
