Activists under the aegis of Human Rights Watch are rallying support from around the world to end child marriage in the United States.
The global rights watchdog said in an email alert sent out on Friday that child marriage was riding to alarming proportions in the United States.
According to HRW, the scourge is being fought across many states but so far only three have taken definite steps to put an end to it.
According to the activists, reforms have been passed in Virginia, Texas and New York.
They say it is is worst in Florida, where there are no rules against underage marriage.
The activists said in a statement by the Senior Researcher, Women’s Rights Division, Human Rights Watch, Ms. Heather Barr, that there no impediments to child marriage in Florida.
They say a bill has been raised in the Florida legislature on the matter and called for people to mount pressure on its members to ensure its successful passage.
The activists are therefore mounting a global campaign to put pressure on Florida lawmakers to stop the unwholesome practice.
They posted a link for supporters to reach the Florida lawmakers.
More worrisome is the complicity of the judiciary as marriahe between sn adult and a minor can.gonahead if a judge approves it!
Reeling out disturbing statistics, the statement said: “Children can legally marry in Florida. There is, in fact, no minimum age for these marriages when the child marrying is pregnant or has a baby and a judge authorizes it.
“From 2001 to 2015, over 16,000 children under the age of 18 married in Florida, the second highest rate in the US for that period.
“Research strongly links child marriage with dropping out of school, poverty, and mental and physical health disorders.
*Activists, including Human Rights Watch, have campaigned for change in other states and reforms have been passed in New York, Texas, and Virginia. Now it is Florida’s turn!
“This fall, a new bill to end child marriage has been introduced in Florida’s state legislature. Please email key Florida lawmakers to tell them to support the bill.
“It’s time we put an end to this!”
The news will come as a shock to many who had akways believed that child marriage is a scourge in Middle East and African nations.
In fact, successive American governments have campaigned against child marriage in other countries but it is hoped that with the issue popping up in its backyard, string action will be taken to put an end to it.
